Yes you can turn the vpn off. That was recommended when there was an internet route problem for some, so the vpn changed your route to the servers.
The sprite error should not have stopped you from sending the gifts. But I would first make sure your computer and browser are up to date. If you have to update either then be sure to restart your computer.
You might want to run the memcache as well to make sure everything with your farms are ok.
