I've just placed it on the farm with the crops I wanted to speed up and used irrigate on the menu, and it that was fine. Seems a bit fiddly though.

Tried both placed on a farm and got a brown one both times and both menus are the same.

Maybe it changes to red when you can use it to speed up crops???
