Hi Early Girl,
The only way to 100% guarantee there would be no problems is to wait until the contest is over and you have claimed your reward before you get rid of the other ones.
If any duplicates are on the same farm as the one that is in the contest, don't sell, delete or store those until the contest is over.
If you are sure that you won't make any mistakes then you can sell the other ones that are not on the same farm that the one in the contest is on.
Should any problem arise and you abandoned the contest, there's no way to get you back into it again.
